GM Introduces New Super Cruise Features to 6 Model Year 2022 Vehicles

The Super Cruise driver assistance technology uses Global Positioning System (GPS) sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision map and network of cameras to maintain automatic control of vehicle steering on compatible roads. The GPS uses real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s location while the Lane Sensing Camera detects the marked lanes on the road to help the vehicle automatically steer and maintain lane position. GM was the first to adopt such maps and contracted with a company then known as Ushr to do high-resolution lidar scans of divided highways throughout the US and Canada. Ushr has since been acquired and rebranded as Dynamic Map Platform (DMP) and still provides the Super Cruise maps.

GM is preparing for another major expansion of its hands-free Super Cruise system

It is recommended that you download your current lightbox contents and clear its assets to add more. If no opening is detected, Super Cruise will slow the vehicle to a minimum gap distance until an opening is found. It’s not just curves and travel speed that Super Cruise is capable of handling for the Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate.

DRIVER ASSISTANCE

The Super Cruise system will be disabled until the ignition is turned off and back on. Automatic updates via your OnStar Super Cruise plan will occur for the latest Super Cruise road availability information. The Super Cruise system is a highly sophisticated system and should only be serviced by technicians with the proper training, tools and safety instructions, which are qualifications Chevrolet dealers have. Without these qualifications the vehicle may become damaged. When the Super Cruise Symbol and steering wheel indicator turn green, you’re ready to go hands-free.

The light bar on the steering wheel will automatically change color from green to blue. Once the maneuver is completed, the driver can remove their hands from the wheel once the vehicle is centered in the lane and the steering wheel light bar turns green. Super Cruise is the first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads, and it’s now being offered on more Chevy vehicles than ever before. Select 2023 vehicles will now include additional features plus an expansion of compatible roads to bring your hands-free experience to the next level. With an ever-growing network, select eligible GMC vehicles can travel on over 400,000 miles of compatible roads throughout the United States and Canada, including both divided and non-divided highways.

Early in a Lane Change On Demand maneuver, you can cancel it by moving the turn signal stalk away from the direction of the lane change. When you do this, your vehicle will return to its original lane and the Super Cruise symbol will remain green. At any time during the maneuver, you can cancel Lane Change On Demand by manually steering. The Super Cruise symbol will turn blue when you do this and the maneuver will be canceled. Once your vehicle is centered in the lane, the Super Cruise symbol will transition back to green. Once you are ready for Super Cruise to steer again, center the vehicle in the lane and wait for the steering wheel to turn green.

To start, a driver must already be using Adaptive Cruise Control. There’s no trick to using Super Cruise if all the required conditions are met. •    There is poor reception in isolated areas.•    Reception is being blocked by buildings or other large structures.•    The owner’s required OnStar Super Cruise plan subscription may have ended. •    Set speed is not required before enabling Super Cruise.•    Adaptive Cruise Control is not required to be engaged before enabling Super Cruise. If the Super Cruise symbol does not appear, press the Super Cruise button to display a DIC message about why the system is unavailable.

Complete attention is always required while driving, even when using Super Cruise. The driver should always be prepared to take over steering or apply the brakes at any time. General Motors will introduce new Super Cruise capabilities on six model year 2022 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022. Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology allowing drivers to travel hands-free on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada.

If you grab the steering wheel AND press the brake pedal, Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control† will disengage. If Super Cruise is included on a trim level, it's a no-brainer. As an option, it's something we would think about before committing. Super Cruise-enabled models come with three years of free connectivity that supports Super Cruise's functionality, and after that, it becomes a paid subscription. It can't predict other drivers' actions; it just reacts to them. Once out of Las Vegas, with traffic easing up, Super Cruise did its job nicely and without incident, until we reached that poorly maintained section with little to no painted lines again.

That includes popular roads like US Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway, and the Trans-Canada Highway. For perspective, 750,000 miles is like traveling one way from Earth to the Moon three times or taking a coast-to-coast road trip from New York City to San Francisco and back nearly 130 times. This new batch of compatible roads makes Super Cruise the largest truly hands-free operating domain in North America — nearly six times the coverage of other hands-free driver assistance technologies on the market today. If Lane Change on Demand† is engaged, you are able to prompt the system to change lanes for you. Comparison of active safety/driver assistance feature availability does not include the relative effectiveness nor functionality of the compared features. Each manufacturer designs and develops features that may or may not perform equivalently due to differences in sensors used, data interpretation, and other vehicle mechanizations.

The white line will disappear once a driver has selected a route and the view on the touchscreen is showing the route as active. Drivers need only select the Alternate Routes Overview on the touchscreen to switch views and find a Super Cruise-compatible road. In addition, the new large touchscreen allows for a wide range of screen combinations and reconfigurability. In order to use Super Cruise, first press the Adaptive Cruise Control† button on the steering wheel to turn on Adaptive Cruise Control.

When Automatic Lane Change is engaged, the gauge cluster will inform the driver when a lane change will occur and will gently guide the vehicle into a desired lane around the vehicle in its path. Or, if the desired lane is unavailable, it will notify the driver that merging must be manually completed. The system will display messages, such as “looking for an opening” or “changing lanes,” to keep the driver informed. When Super Cruise™ is active, your vehicle will also change lanes if the current lane is ending, as well as pass (to the left) around slower moving vehicles and return to its original lane. All Super Cruise™-equipped vehicles include 3 years of connectivity to support functionality, after which an eligible paid Connected Services plan is required.
